This wine, made from the northern Italian variety Lagrain, is an incredibly dense and deep red/purple colour that seems almost to stain the glass. The flavours are predominantly of plums and dark berries, and there’s a brooding earthiness — quite appropriate for a wine whose name translates as “tears of the earth” — to the wine as it rolls down the tongue. This is a fine winter sparkling red that will readily stand toe-to-toe with the heartiest stew. And there are certainly no signs of any oxidation problems.
