The surname of Conte emerged in Italy around the 8th century. Born in 1910, Antonino Conte owned commercial vineyards in his hometown of Sassinoro, three hours drive south of Rome. Since arriving in McLaren Vale with his family in 1953, this enduring and venerable tradition has continued.
Planted circa 1880, the ‘Over The Hill’ vineyard is one of a small handful of century old surviving Shiraz vineyards in McLaren Vale, providing the fruit with flavour and complexity from over 130 years of establishing a synchrony with its environment.
The wine is crafted by winemaker Dan Conte using minimal intervention methods passed down from his late grandfather Antonino. The combination of its terroir, age and winemaking method expresses unique nutty and biscuity characters, along with a spiced black fruit compote and a whetstone earthiness. Matured in French oak barrels, the wine saturates the pallet, subtly gripped with fine tannins. Finishing long and lingering, it will evolve majestically for many years.
Vinification
Handpicked, semi crushed and small batch open fermented for over 1 week. The wine was then matured in new and seasoned French oak barrels for 18 months to allow characters to integrate and soften.
